Bulgarian by GEO: Countries and Markets

Bulgarian is the state language of Bulgaria and one of the 24 official languages of the European Union. The core commercial market is concentrated in Bulgaria, but separate Bulgarian-speaking audiences exist in Moldova and Serbia.

In Ukraine, the 2001 census recorded 204,574 ethnic Bulgarians, of whom 131,237 named Bulgarian as their native language. Given the age of that census and subsequent migration changes, Ukraine is better mentioned in a separate paragraph rather than included in the main GEO list of current markets.

For eCommerce, financial services, local services and SEO copywriting, Bulgaria remains the primary market. Moldova and Serbia need separate regional pages only when there’s confirmed demand and a specific Bulgarian-speaking audience.

What’s Specific About Bulgarian Copywriting

Bulgarian is a South Slavic language with its own grammar, vocabulary and norms of address. A direct translation from Russian or Ukrainian often produces calques and unnatural constructions that the local audience spots quickly.

  1. Cyrillic and the alphabet. Modern Bulgarian uses a 30-letter Cyrillic alphabet. The letter ъ marks a separate vowel sound and does not correspond to the Russian hard sign. Correct spelling must be preserved in headings, meta tags, anchors, page URLs and CMS fields.
  2. Grammar and keywords. In modern Bulgarian, the infinitive is largely replaced by a construction with да and a finite verb form. So verb-based keywords can’t be carried over from Russian without grammatical adaptation. Semantics are better built separately for Bulgarian search results.
  3. Search engines. In May 2026, Google held 96.02% of Bulgaria’s search market, with Bing at 3.03%. The main optimization is built for Google: H1-H3, meta tags, snippets, intent, internal linking and natural query forms.
  4. Form of address. For B2B, finance, medicine, law and most classic online stores, the polite form Вие is generally used. The form ти suits youth brands, apps, entertainment and social media. The chosen form of address must be kept across the whole page.
  5. iGaming and regulation. Gambling licensing is handled by the National Revenue Agency of Bulgaria, and the former State Commission on Gambling has been abolished. For iGaming copywriting, you need to account for the operator’s status, responsible gambling, age limits and restrictions on gambling advertising.
  6. Tone and delivery. Bulgarian audiences usually respond better to clear, concrete copy without excessive promises. Commercial pages need understandable terms, facts and natural calls to action. Word-for-word constructions from Russian often look unconvincing.

If you already have Russian or English material, it can serve as a meaning base. But translation needs refining for Bulgarian grammar, semantics, form of address and local legal requirements.

FAQ

Do I Need to Build Keywords Separately for Bulgarian?

Yes. Bulgarian queries can't be produced by simply swapping Russian or Ukrainian words. Verb constructions, endings, word order and commercial phrasing all differ. It's better to build a separate semantic core for the page.

When Should I Use Вие and When ти?

Вие suits B2B, finance, medicine, law, education and most online stores. Ти is more fitting for youth brands, apps, entertainment and social media. The form of address is best decided before the text is written.

Why Can't the Bulgarian Letter ъ Be Replaced?

In Bulgarian, ъ marks a vowel sound and appears in ordinary words. Removing or replacing it changes the spelling and can make a word incorrect. It's especially important to check this letter in headings, keywords and page URLs.

Can Russian Text Be Used as a Base?

You can use the structure and verified facts, but not ready-made phrasing. Bulgarian text requires its own grammar, semantics and natural word order. A direct adaptation usually leaves noticeable calques.
