GEOs Where Turkish Is Used

Turkish is the official language of Turkey and one of the two official languages of the Republic of Cyprus. About 90 million people speak Turkish, of whom roughly 84 million use it as a first language.

  • Turkey – official · population ~86.09 million, Turkish is the first language for about 90% of the population, around 77.5 million people
  • Bulgaria – language of the Turkish community · Turkish is native for 514,386 residents (8.7% of those who answered the census question)
  • Germany – large diaspora audience · population ~83.5 million, ~1.48 million Turkish citizens (~1.8% of the population); the actual Turkish audience is wider thanks to German citizens of Turkish origin
  • Netherlands – diaspora audience · population ~18.13 million, ~479,900 residents of Turkish origin (~2.6% of the population)

In Cyprus, Turkish has official status alongside Greek, but there’s no comparable up-to-date language statistics for the whole island. The area administered by Turkish Cypriots has about 382,800 people. For such a project, you need to account separately for the Cypriot variety of Turkish, local vocabulary and legal context.

The main commercial GEO remains Turkey. If you need to order SEO copywriting for Germany, Bulgaria or the Netherlands, the text must be adapted to the audience’s country of residence rather than using the Turkish page unchanged.

What’s Specific About Turkish Copywriting

Turkish copywriting requires precise work with agglutinative grammar, special letters, vowel harmony and the form of address. A direct translation from Russian or English often produces unnatural word forms and breaks the logic of key queries.

  1. Alphabet and special letters. Turkish uses a 29-letter Latin alphabet, including Ç, Ğ, I, İ, Ö, Ş and Ü. Special attention is needed for the pairs I / ı and İ / i: incorrect case conversion can distort a word. These characters must display correctly in headings, meta tags, URLs, anchors and CMS fields.
  2. Agglutination and vowel harmony. Grammatical meanings in Turkish are conveyed through chains of suffixes, and their form depends on the vowels in the root. So key phrases can’t be inserted mechanically in an unchanged form. Semantics need collecting separately for Turkish results and distributing with natural word forms in mind.
  3. Search engines. In May 2026, Google held 82.59% of Turkey’s search market, with Yandex at 14.91%. The main optimization is built for Google, but Yandex remains a noticeable channel and can be considered when analyzing competitors and Russian-language queries.
  4. Regional variants. For the Turkey market, the modern literary norm based on the Istanbul variety is used. Cypriot Turkish and the speech of the diaspora in Germany, Bulgaria or the Netherlands can differ in vocabulary, borrowings and everyday wording. So site localization must account for the specific country and use scenario.
  5. Tone and address. In business communication, finance, medicine, law and B2B, the respectful form siz is usually used. The informal form sen suits youth brands, apps, entertainment projects and social media. The form of address must be chosen before the work starts and kept throughout the text.
  6. iGaming and legal wording. Gambling in Turkey operates in a strictly limited state model: certain lotteries, horse racing and betting through authorized channels are allowed, while illegal online gambling and unlicensed sites are blocked. So iGaming copywriting can’t be built on the templates of open European markets. Texts must account for the legality of the offer, advertising restrictions and the operator’s status.

Turkish text needs preparing for a specific market, search engine and form of address. One version can’t be used without checking for Turkey, Cyprus and the European diaspora at once.

FAQ

How Does Turkish in Turkey Differ From Turkish in Cyprus?

Cypriot Turkish is close to Turkey's literary norm but differs in part of the vocabulary, pronunciation and local expressions. For a general commercial page, the differences may be minor. For local services, law, real estate and tourism, the text is better adapted separately.

Does Turkish Need Adapting for Germany and the Netherlands?

Yes, if the page relates to local services, work, finance, insurance or real estate. The language stays Turkish, but the administrative terms, currency, institution names and habitual examples change. A direct copy of the Turkey page can contain irrelevant wording.

Why Is It Important to Distinguish I / ı and İ / i?

In Turkish these are four independent characters, not variants of one letter. An error in case conversion can create a different word or an incorrect form. The problem is especially common in automatic headings, page URLs and CMS fields.

When to Use siz and When sen?

Siz suits business texts, finance, medicine, law, education and most online stores. Sen is more fitting for youth brands, apps, games and informal social media. Mixing forms of address on one page without reason isn't worth it.
